A new beginning

As we've transitioned our learning to Google Classroom, I'll be ending communication from the blog. If you're having difficulty accessing our digital classroom, please email me.

I'll see you over on Google Classroom!

Hi Everyone!

Our class continued to be a quiet place this week, but not a moment went by when I wasn't thinking of each of you.  I hope that you are all well and safe.

What have you been up to this week?  I enjoyed finishing our hot insulator experiment on Monday (you can check out the picture below!) and am thinking that maybe I'm ready to build my insulator to see if I can keep something cold.  This would be a great activity that you could do at home with your parents with things around the house.  I'm sure there is some sort of frozen food in your fridge you can ask to use.  I'd love to see what you create and if it works!

I'd love to hear from you, so feel free to write a comment below or you can send me an email (algardner@cbe.ab.ca)

Take time to enjoy yourselves over the spring break.  You definitely deserve it.  I spent a lot of time this week reviewing all your work from the last few weeks, and even since our Celebration I was surprised at how much we had done!  You are all such hard workers and you amaze me!  I will also be taking family time next week, and focusing on staying healthy and active.

We continue to wait for directions from the CBE for out next steps in terms of providing instruction to our students.  The CBE shared this link with all families that provides a list of resources you can access from home:
 https://cbe.ab.ca/programs/curriculum/learning-at-home/Pages/k-6.aspx

Here are some other online resources we use in class that you can continue to use from home:
Prodigy Math
Epic!
Raz-Kids

If you have any problems accessing our class accounts, please do not hesitate to contact me and I'll be more than happy to help.

Take care and have a wonderful Spring Break.  I'll be thinking of you all and look forward to connecting with you after Spring Break.

Love,
Ms. Gardner

Thinking of You All at this Time

It was a sad time this morning to return to our school building and have it eerily quiet with only staff.  I want you to know that I am thinking of all of the students in our class today and you and your families as you negotiate this difficult time.  My thoughts go out to each of you and wish you the best in being safe and for your children to be safe as well.
We wait for direction to follow from the board as to what learning will look like for your children in the near future.

As scared as we are as adults, we must remember that this is a very uneasy and challenging times for the little ones in our households as well.  I encourage you to take comfort in each other, and show each other your love for one another.  Hold your babies close.  They are looking to you to see how you respond and will remember the feeling in their house during this trying time in the years to come.

On Friday we attempted a science experiment to see how different insulators keep things hot and because the water was SOOOO hot, we didn't get an accurate measurement.  I told students that we would go back to it on Monday, and so I am going to keep my word.
I repeated the experiment again today (by myself!) but with warm water from the sink tap.  After one hour, I found the temperatures to be:
Cotton Balls: 26 Celsius
Fabric: 25 Celsius
Paper: 24 Celsius
Tin Foil: 27 Celsius
Bubble Wrap: 27 Celsius
Nothing: 25 Celsius

Very interesting results indeed, and maybe a conversation starter in your house

:)

Take time to share a book together at home sometime soon, and enjoy that story together.  Sending you all my best.

Keeping it Hot

Today was a super busy half day in Grade 2.

In Science, we tested different materials as insulators for keeping boiling water hot.  Ask your child the different materials that were wrapped around the jars.  What did we notice?

Book Fair next week will still be going ahead during school hours.  Only students who bring cash will be able to buy books.  The Grade 2s will be visiting the book fair on Thursday.  Ms. Gall will take the students down and support with buying books.

Change to Parent Teacher Conferences

Please be sure to read the email sent regarding the change to parent teacher conferences next week.

Today we had a little conversation about being kind to others and doing what is expected.  Many students in class continue to show and demonstrate expected behaviours on a daily basis, but some friends are finding it hard to be kind and caring to everyone.  This might be a good conversation to have with your child, if you think they need a reminder from home as well.

Keeping it Cold

Going home today is a sample of your child's work with solving problems in math using addition and subtraction.  Please read the attached note with their sample for more details.  If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

Today we did a science experiment with testing different insulating materials for keeping popsicles from melting.  Here is what we saw and learned:
I learned that different materials can make things melt less than other materials or more than another material - Grace T
I learned that cotton balls are the best insulator to use - Chase
I learned that the amount of liquid that melts can be less or more depending on what type of material you use - Thandi
I was shocked that the tin foil was a poor insulator!!! - Ms G (me too! said everyone else)
Ask your child - What was the best insulator (had the LEAST amount of melted popsicle).  What was the worst/poorest insulator? (had the most amount of melted popsicle.
What makes a good insulator?

Safe Practises with Hot and Cold

Here are some of the highlights from the day:
In Phys Ed we were doing different stations for exercising - Jade
In writing, we were finishing up our articles for our news writing. - Grace T
In Science we had pictures of different things and we had to think about how to be safe when things are hot or cold - Zoie
In math we were reviewing our skills in math to prepare and share for Parent Teacher Conferences.  - Muhammad

A few friends are coming home with notices for Overdue Books from the Learning Commons.
